Chat GPT compiles Street Sounds Hip Hop volumes 23-51

A.I. imagines what might have happened if the series had never stopped.

I’ve had a couple of chats recently with people about the upcoming 23rd volume in the Street Sounds Hip Hop /Electro series, which is thirty-six years after Volume 22 was released in 1988.

There isn’t much info about the release other than it has dropped any reference to ‘Hip Hop’ and being billed as ‘Electro 23’, which is hardly a surprise seeing as though today’s core fanbase mostly reminisce over their love for electro, with the genre slowly being replaced by hip hop as the series developed.

It's crucial to understand that in 2009, Street Sounds reawakened its interest with the introduction of 'Nu Electro' compilations. This series, spanning four volumes by 2012, and the 'Crucial' series' fourth installment in 2013, stirred diverse reactions within the fanbase.

Some listeners praised these releases for their ability to evoke nostalgia, their curated track selection, and the tangible return to old-school electro sounds. On the flip side, others expressed disappointment on various fronts. Criticisms ranged from a perceived lack of originality to subpar mixing quality when compared to the OG Streetsounds Electro series. There were also debates about genre representation, with some feeling the newer releases deviated from the expected electro style.

Nu Electro Volume 4, in particular, became a canvas for mixed reviews. While some appreciated its diverse tracklist, others found it misleading in terms of genre representation. Meanwhile, Crucial Electro Volume 4 faced its own set of criticisms, with questions about its relevance in contemporary times. Some viewed it more as fan service than a cohesive representation of electro's evolution.

So back to the chats I’d had. I was a huge fan of the Street Sounds series, and except for a handful of electro tracks my taste moved happily into the hip hop sound. I was totally on board with the way the series was changing, so it was no real shocker that I had no interest in the new releases SS started putting out. I said that if it was up to me, my version of volume 23 would have a tracklist from the time that the LP would have been originally released, towards the end of 1988.

I’m currently working on a project that involves the use of A.I., so I thought I’d go one step further and challenge Chat GPT to suggest a track listing for volume 23, based on the contents of the previous 22 volumes, and after a few false starts and prompt tweaks it didn’t do a bad job, but no matter how much I tried I just couldn’t get it to not suggest tracks that were either a year too late or early. Some are a mix of wrong artists with wrong tracks and some tracks just don’t even exist! For example, it suggested, Sade – "Smooth Operator" (Big Daddy Kane Remix) when it clearly should have been Big Daddy Kane’s track of the same name and even then it wasn’t released until 1989. And then just for the hell of it, I asked it to continue the series up to volume 51 which, at four releases a year takes us to the end of 1995. It’s clearly taking sounds from a small pool of artists, and often there is an artist with multiple tracks on each release… and lots of instrumental versions or remixes of tracks already featured… but then what do you expect from A.I.?!
