Welcome to the highly addictive and ultimately endless quest for European picture sleeve 7 inch singles that in some capacity feature elements of
'The funk'. A niche pastime maybe, but one with some pretty wide parameters.
From obscure soundtracks and library music to Italian prog and oddball easy listening, there is something very satisfying about having just the best track from an otherwise unremarkable LP or even better, a song that exists only on the handy 7 inch format with the added bonus of cover art or picture sleeve to complete the package! The Ghosts of Nottingham 45 ticks a lot of these boxes.
A cinematic, library-style instrumental track for a bugged out psychedelic horror movie that probably doesn’t exist... check.
A group of musicians shrouded in mystery recording under several different aliases... check.
A neck snapping syncopated drum break intro... check.
Fuzz-guitars, breathy wordless scat-style vocals and a funky flute solo with slight proggy overtones... check.
Combine these elements together on to the B side (of course) of a 7 inch record and then take my money!
